The 6th Geoss (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) European project workshop has taken place recently in Rome, at National Research Council of Italy (Cnr) and it has been organized by the European Commission in cooperation with Cnr, Asi, Ispra, and the Egida project. Aim of the meeting was to introduce the European projects of the group on Earth Observation which supports Geoss project.
The Italian contribution to Geoss is significant, covering the three parts considered by the Geo initiative: infrastructure, institution and development and societal benefits.
As for the Geoss common infrastructure, the Cnr-Institute for Atmospheric Pollution Research (Iia) developed and maintains the discovery and access broker component which was the great innovation presented at the last Geo plenary meeting in Istanbul. Cnr leads also the Egida project which is developing a sustainable approach for Geo. Moreover several Italian institutes coordinate many European projects which contribute to implement the Geo work plan as far as societal benefit areas services, such as the Global Mercury Observation System, directed by Cnr-Iia.
The participants in the workshop have agreed to "advocate with their national delegates responsible for the negotiations within the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Process, that the final summit declaration should fully recognize the advantages to continue supporting the Geoss implementation to increase the benefits from space technologies, in situ data and geospatial information, as an important contribution to a green economy, from the local to the global level".
